IT support and managed IT services across the West Midlands

Computercentric provides IT support and managed IT services for small and medium-sized businesses across the West Midlands, from Birmingham and Wolverhampton to Walsall, Sutton Coldfield and Lichfield.

Most businesses here are small: ONS figures show that in March 2026, 88.7% of the 94,700 registered businesses across the seven metropolitan boroughs had fewer than ten employees. A business that size rarely has an IT department. What it has is an office manager, a director or the one person who is “good with computers”, quietly holding the whole thing together.

We have been the IT department for businesses like that for over 20 years, working from our base in Aldridge, on the edge of Walsall. Some clients hand us their entire IT. Others, such as a 100-plus person insurance broker in Walsall, keep their own IT staff and use us for the network, servers and the harder problems behind them.

Either way, the aim is the same: technology that works when your team needs it, security you can explain to a customer or insurer, and a local partner who picks up the phone.

Managed IT services for West Midlands businesses: what we include

Managed IT means we look after your systems continuously for a predictable monthly cost, instead of waiting for something to break. For most West Midlands businesses, our managed IT services cover:

  • Helpdesk support for your staff, by phone, email and remote session
  • Proactive monitoring of PCs, laptops, servers and network equipment
  • Security updates and patching for Windows, Microsoft 365 and business applications
  • Microsoft 365 security and administration: accounts, mailboxes, Teams, SharePoint and multi-factor authentication
  • Endpoint protection, email filtering and phishing defence
  • Backup and recovery for servers, devices and Microsoft 365 data, with restores tested rather than assumed
  • Joiners and leavers set up and closed down properly, on the day
  • Support for remote and hybrid staff working from home or between sites
  • Liaison with your software, broadband and phone suppliers, so you are not stuck in the middle
  • On-site visits from a local engineer when a problem needs hands on the kit
  • Regular reviews of your setup, risks and upcoming costs
  • Help with Cyber Essentials and the security questionnaires customers and insurers send

You get one number to call, one team that knows your setup, and far fewer surprises. Our page on business IT support goes into the day-to-day service in more detail.

Computercentric IT support team in a meeting at the company office

Local IT support from a team that knows the region

Several of the companies ranking for “IT support West Midlands” are based in London, Yorkshire or further afield and serve the region from a national helpdesk. That works until you need someone in the building. Then the difference between a provider down the road and one at the other end of the country becomes very real.

Our support starts remotely, because that is the fastest way to fix most problems. A locked account, a printer that has vanished from the network or an Outlook profile that refuses to open can usually be sorted while you are still on the phone. When a problem needs hands on site, such as a failed switch, new cabling, a Wi-Fi survey or a server that will not boot, one of our engineers comes to you.

You also deal with the same people over time. That sounds small, but it is the reason clients like San Carlo and In-Comm Training have stayed with us for more than two decades: the engineers who pick up the call already know how their systems fit together.

Working alongside your own IT team

Not every business wants to outsource everything. If you already employ an IT person or a small team, we can act as their second and third line, taking on network infrastructure, servers, security tools and projects while your staff handle the daily requests. Think Insurance Services in Walsall works with us exactly this way.

Areas we cover across the West Midlands

From Aldridge, most of the conurbation and its Staffordshire edge is within easy reach. Each of the areas below has its own page with local detail.

Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield and Bournville

Birmingham is home to 38,605 registered businesses (ONS, March 2026), from professional firms around Colmore Row to manufacturers, retailers and logistics companies in the suburbs. We provide IT support in Birmingham, including dedicated pages for Sutton Coldfield and Bournville.

Walsall and Aldridge

This is home ground. Walsall’s economy leans heavily on manufacturing and logistics, which accounted for roughly 10% of local employee jobs each in 2024 (ONS BRES). Our pages for Walsall and Aldridge cover the industrial estates and town-centre offices we visit most often.

Wolverhampton and the Black Country

We support businesses across Wolverhampton and the wider Black Country, including Dudley, West Bromwich, Willenhall and Bilston, where workshop floors, warehouses and offices often share one network.

Lichfield and the Staffordshire border

Lichfield, Burntwood and Tamworth sit in Staffordshire rather than the West Midlands county, but for us they are next door. See our page on IT support in Lichfield.

Cyber security for small businesses in the West Midlands

The government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025/26, published on 30 April 2026, found that 42% of micro businesses and 46% of small businesses identified a breach or attack in the previous 12 months. Phishing was the most common, reported by 38% of businesses. These are UK figures, but there is no reason to think the West Midlands is any different.

The region has also seen how far an incident can travel. When Jaguar Land Rover shut down its systems after a cyber attack in September 2025, a Black Country Chamber of Commerce snap survey of 84 businesses, mostly in JLR’s supply chain, found that 77% had felt a negative impact. Many of those firms had not been attacked at all; their biggest customer had simply stopped. Cyber resilience is about keeping your business running, not only keeping data safe.

For most small firms the controls that matter are not exotic:

  • Multi-factor authentication on email, Microsoft 365 and remote access
  • Security updates applied quickly, especially the critical ones
  • Named accounts for everyone, with admin rights only where needed
  • Managed endpoint protection and email filtering
  • Backups kept separate from the live system and tested
  • A short, written plan for what happens if something goes wrong

Cyber Essentials, the government-backed baseline certificate, now treats some of these as automatic fails. Its requirements update from 26 April 2026 fails applicants who do not use MFA on cloud services where it is available, or who leave critical and high-risk updates unapplied for more than 14 days. We help clients put those controls in place and prepare for certification.

Local businesses can also join the Cyber Resilience Centre for the West Midlands, a police-led service whose core membership is free and which shares guidance and threat alerts. Our page on cybersecurity services in Birmingham covers how we protect clients day to day.

IT engineer checking hardware next to a network cabinet with patch cabling

One partner for connectivity, phones and hardware

Many IT problems turn out to be broadband problems, phone problems or “the old PC in the corner” problems. We look after all of them, so nobody can blame the other supplier.

Broadband, leased lines and network design

We supply business broadband and leased lines, with 4G or 5G backup where a site cannot afford to go offline. Gigabit coverage in the region is high, but availability still varies from one unit to the next on older industrial estates, so we check the actual building before recommending anything. Inside the building, our network design and installation team handles cabling, switches, firewalls and Wi-Fi that reaches the warehouse as well as the office.

Business phones and the 2027 switch-off

Openreach’s deadline for moving off the old analogue phone network is 31 January 2027. Desk phones are the easy part. Alarm diallers, lift lines, door entry systems and older card terminals often run over the same lines and need checking with their own suppliers. Our business phone systems give you cloud-based calling with your existing numbers, and we help plan the rest of the move.

What still runs on your old phone lines?

Tick everything in your building that uses a traditional landline. Desk phones are rarely the only thing.

days leftuntil 31 January 2027

Openreach is moving every business off the old analogue network. Anything still plugged into it needs a new connection, tested before the date.

Which of these do you have?

Openreach deadline for moving off the analogue phone network: 31 January 2027 (Openreach and UK government, 2026). Your own provider's date may be earlier. Nothing you tick is recorded or sent.

Hardware, leasing and secure disposal

We source laptops, PCs and servers through our IT hardware supply service, or spread the cost with TechPlan IT leasing, which In-Comm Training uses to keep every member of staff on current equipment with no upfront cost. When kit reaches the end of its life, our secure data destruction service wipes or shreds the drives and gives you a certificate to prove it. For processes that off-the-shelf software cannot handle, we also offer bespoke software development.

IT support for the sectors that drive the region

The West Midlands economy is broader than its manufacturing reputation suggests. Health and social care is the largest employing sector across the seven boroughs, and Birmingham alone had 63,000 professional, scientific and technical jobs in 2024 (ONS BRES). We have dedicated pages for the sectors we support most:

What managed IT support costs in the West Midlands

Published UK supplier pricing in 2026 generally puts managed IT support at around £40 to £100 per user per month, rising to £100 to £150 where advanced security or extended hours are included. Those are market benchmarks, not our rates. The real cost depends on how many people and devices you have, whether you run servers, how many sites you operate, what security you need and whether on-site visits are included. Some providers claim a London premium, but no independent study shows a reliable regional difference, so compare quotes on the same specification.

It helps to compare that with employing someone. Recruiter Ashdown Group’s 2026 West Midlands salary guide puts the median first-line support engineer at £31,304, or roughly £36,000 a year once employer National Insurance and minimum pension are added, before recruitment, training, tools and holiday cover. One person gives you dedicated time and local knowledge. A managed service gives you a team with a wider range of skills. Many businesses find the second option better value until they reach a size where both make sense.

Our guide to small business IT support costs breaks down pricing models in more detail, and we are always happy to quote against your actual setup.

Switching IT provider without the disruption

Changing IT company worries people more than it should, because done properly your staff should barely notice it has happened. A good handover usually looks like this:

  1. We review your current contract dates, notice period and any software subscriptions tied to your existing provider.
  2. You confirm that your business, not the provider, controls the Microsoft 365 tenancy, your domain name and the administrator accounts.
  3. The outgoing provider hands over passwords, network details, licence records and backup information through a secure method.
  4. We set up monitoring, security and backup on our side and test them before anything is removed.
  5. The old provider’s remote access tools and accounts are removed and their access closed.
  6. You get a short summary of what we found, what we fixed and anything that still needs attention.

Changing support provider almost never means moving your email or data to a new Microsoft 365 account. The tenancy stays yours; only the people looking after it change.

West Midlands businesses that rely on Computercentric

Our longest client relationships say more than any promise on a web page. San Carlo Group, which runs 25 restaurants around the UK, has relied on us for IT support, phones and connectivity across its sites for more than 20 years. In-Comm Training, one of the UK’s leading apprenticeship providers, has worked with us for over two decades and sources all of its IT equipment through TechPlan.

Closer to home, Think Insurance Services in Walsall uses us alongside its in-house IT team for network infrastructure, servers, phones and security. Vesta Space has been with us since its founders first planned the business in 2017, and Erwin Hymer Centre Travelworld in Stafford has worked with our founder Ross for nearly 20 years.

Frequently asked questions about IT support in the West Midlands

Which areas of the West Midlands do you cover?

We support businesses across Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Bournville, Walsall, Aldridge, Wolverhampton and the Black Country, as well as Lichfield and surrounding parts of Staffordshire. Our office is in Aldridge, so most of the region is within easy reach for on-site visits. Remote support works the same wherever you are.

What is included in your managed IT services?

Managed IT covers helpdesk support, proactive monitoring, patching, Microsoft 365 administration, endpoint and email security, backup and supplier liaison, plus on-site visits when needed. The exact scope is agreed with you in writing, so you know what is covered and what counts as a separate project.

How quickly can you get someone on site?

That depends on the problem, where you are and the level of service in your agreement. Most issues are fixed remotely, which is usually the fastest route. When an engineer needs to attend, we tell you honestly when we can be there, and problems that stop people working always come first.

How much does IT support cost for a small business?

Published UK supplier pricing in 2026 generally ranges from about £40 to £100 per user per month for managed support, depending on scope, security and service hours. Those are market benchmarks rather than our prices. We quote based on your users, devices, sites and requirements.

Can you work with our existing IT person?

Yes. Many of our clients have someone in-house who handles day-to-day requests. We act as their back-up and specialist support, taking on networks, servers, security, projects and holiday cover.

Can you help us get Cyber Essentials?

Yes. We help put the required controls in place, such as MFA, patching, secure configuration and malware protection, and prepare you for the assessment. Under the requirements in force since April 2026, missing MFA on cloud services or leaving critical updates for more than 14 days are automatic fails, so it pays to get the basics right first.

Do you support businesses with more than one site?

Yes. We support multi-site organisations across the region and beyond, including connectivity between sites, shared phone systems and backup links so one site going offline does not stop the rest of the business.

How do we switch from our current IT provider?

We manage most of the handover for you. That includes checking your notice period, confirming you control your Microsoft 365 and domain, collecting passwords and documentation securely, setting up our own tools before the old ones are removed and closing the previous provider’s access.

Do you support remote and hybrid teams?

Yes. We secure and support laptops and phones wherever your staff work, set up safe remote access and keep devices updated and protected outside the office. Our guide to remote and hybrid IT support covers the practical side.

Talk to a West Midlands IT support company that knows your patch

Most businesses only think about IT when it stops working, and reactive support fixes the problem in front of you without stopping the next one. Proactive IT support catches the failing drive, the missing update and the leaver who still has access before they turn into a bad day.

The best place to start is a conversation and a review of your current setup. We will look at your devices, network, accounts, backups, connectivity and phones, then give you a plain list of what is working, what needs fixing and what it would cost.
